The free market ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
The free market would have never given AT&T their control over cable/network franchises. The current situation is a result of government interference, thus we should ask for MORE interference to fix the problem!
Excuse me, you're ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
Excuse me, you're blaming the government for allowing ATT to censure a video? Look at the history of corporate power. Yes, politicians are in the pockets of corporations and their wealthy owners, but it was corporations who pushed that agenda. If anything, it's the people who allow it to go on that should be blamed, but free marketeers believe in the good ness of corporations, that the market will somehow correct everything.
I am not blaming ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
I am not blaming government for allowing ATT to censor, I'm blaming them for giving us a limited number of options for our internet service. You're right, it is the people that allowed it, but the solution is not for more government interference, we, the people, need to require open access to OUR lines.
Furthermore, I ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
Furthermore, I don't live in a fantasy world that requires the goodness of corporations. I do, however, live in a world where when people have choices between a company that censors and one that doesn't, they will chose to do business with the one that doesn't. The free market is not about the goodness of corporations, its about the decision-making-abilities of the people who keep corporations in business, the consumers.
nex, Again, I don't ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
nex, Again, I don't think people will chose a different company, especially when it comes to untilities, like ATT. Moreover, how many people are aware that AT&T censored the Pearl Jam video. How many won't think to question that censorship. Then, I ask you, how many [politicians who are aware of the censorship will react, speak out, challenge the telecommunications giant? Not many, since AT&T are huge campaign donors.
It was the ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
It was the telecommunications corporations who wrote the laws passed during the Clinton admins in 1996. Why don't we privatize government. Oh, I forgot, it already is. My solution is making campaigns publicly financed, no more hard or soft money, period. Arizona and Maine have done it with great success.
People would chose ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
People would chose different companies if things like this mattered to them. There are a number of scenarios that would allow people to be informed, including private companies such as Consumer Reports letting the public know, or companies with civic-minded leaders (rare I know, but they do exist) who would use this information in advertising campaigns against their censoring competition.
Check your premise, ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
Check your premise, you're thinking of utilities as a separate market, which leads you to overlook real market effects on it... forces that currently don't apply because of it's relationship with government. And I'm with you, I don't trust any politicians to challenge the status quo... that's why I want them out of it completely.
Check your premise. ... ( 1 year ago by nexalacer)
Check your premise. I am for a smaller government where the corporations wouldn't have their hands in everything, because the government wouldn't be involved in everything. However, that's a far off goal, and in the mean time, I'm with you again, if there IS big money in government, publicly financed campaigns are a good idea. Although I am morally offended by the idea of MY tax dollars supporting my OPPONENT. However, we must make small steps and this is a place where I can compromise.
nex, publicly ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
nex, publicly financed campaigns are not taxpayer funded. in Arizona, the money comes from a donation box on the tax form, like you have for federal gov. Each candidate must collect X amount of signatures, plus a $5 donation with each signature. Now, I would expand the campaign fund to include free air time from FCC licencees, in other words, the local and national media outlets.
nex, I appreciate ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
nex, I appreciate your honesty, and yes we can agree on many things. However, the path to getting there is a long and wily one, with big money poolitics fighting all the way. Like Hitler, who slowly eased power away from the people, so did corporations, and I am a little troubled when people look at social services critically but ignore the greatest benefactors of the public dole: corporations!
cont. I trust ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
cont. I trust several politicians to challenge the big money campaigns, however, the power of the media prevents people like Kucinich, Ron Paul, and Gravel from getting noticed. Look at the Dems Iowa debate. Kucincich waited 50 mins before being called on to answer a question. The media has control over who's elected.
cont. 2, In my ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
cont. 2, In my perefect world, our educational system would be utilized for educating young people to be critical citizens, rather than mindless workers/employees. I have spent the past 20 years pushing a different educational system that would do that. However, politicans who know nothing about educ pushe dthe no child left behind act, which dumbs down ed. (see my vid on NCLB)
Cont 3, in that ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
Cont 3, in that educational model, I would agree on free markets, as long as corporations lose their excessive superpowers and rights. They deserve no rights, except to produce a product or service at a profit. But, they should not be able to own land or outlive their usefulness. And, a corporate charter should be evoked at the first sign of impropriety.
How about pulling ... ( 1 year ago by FattKidd)
How about pulling their FCC licenses or revoking their corporate charter? There's plenty that can be done. What's lacking is the will of those in put in charge to represent US, the consumers.
Fatt, there hasn't ... ( 1 year ago by peacelf)
Fatt, there hasn't been a corporate charter pulled since nobody knows when. The political will no longer exists because the corporations own the politicans; in other words, the police work for the criminals.
