That's totally true! This song kind of followed the synthesizer-heavy "boogie" pattern funk that Stevie Wonder developed on "Superstitious" and that the Commodores continued with their '74 & '75 work. There are some "disco" parts to this song though. The constant falsetto on the chorus (more of a philly soul leftover, though), and definitely the dramatic line around 2:23. Other than that, this is more "Urban" than disco. Very funky & hypnotic. Dazz and Gap band developed a similar style.
