I remember the original musical version coming to Los Angeles in the fall of 1982. I didn't have the money or a car to go see it. So I ended up getting the soundtrack a few years later.
I like this ending better since it sticks to the original ending (or much closer to it). Plus those special effects are cool. I like how Audrey II morphs into a "Godzilla" state of destruction. That works as a nice epilogue (and grand finale!) to end the show with.

Ok now I liked the cheesy ending better, BUT things make more sense to me now after seeing this. I had the soundtrack for the movie and I was wondering why this song wasn't in the movie. Now I understand. That did look very expensive to make as someone mentioned, and its a shame it had to be cut, but after building up to a expected happy ending to have thos happen, kind of doesnt make sense to me. So I like the ending they went with, with the plant at then end kind of letting you think uh oh.

30 whole seconds of no singing at the beginning of this clip. That's the longest no-singing no-talking pause I have ever heard in a movie.
It's followed by 22 seconds of silence at the end of the clip. Whoever filmed this must really like the quiet when watching a movie. lol

That's the only thing I didn't like about it. I spend and hour and a half watching an offbeat comedy only to watch a tragically depressing ending. (actually, I really like the cornball rampage sequence featured here, it's just when they kill off Audrey and Seymour that bothers me)

This song does teach us the moral of our story; don't give into evil temptations. It does break the fourth wall which is usually not great unless direct adress to the audience is used a great deal throughout the movie which it isn't. The Godzilla-esque ending seemed appropriate for what would happen if the plague of plants were to sweep the world. I guess a depressing film needs a happy ending so we can feel good ourselves. I'll give the ending 3.5 stars for it's loyalty to the play.
