The style of the ...( 8 months ago by weikko79)
The style of the narration of the newsreel is actually a parody of the "backwards" style of Henry R. Luce's newsreels, e.g. "Famed in American legend is the origin of the Kane fortune", "For 40 years appeared in Kane newsprint no public issue on which Kane himself took no stand", etc. It had already been parodied in The New Yorker ("Where will it all end, knows God!"), and Herman J. Mankiewicz wanted to outdo that parody - he wrote the entire narration.

I only now noticed that the name of the Russian newspaper is not "Pravda", but "Bednota", meaning "poverty". I haven't seen this pointed out in any text on Citizen Kane, though obviously I haven't read them all.

Isn't this the wildest film, certainly of it's time, you can imagine? I've always said either Welles was some kind of existential nut or simply the greatest brand of genius film had seen up to that time. He saw the big picture in life and allowed no avenue of industry, technology or present day trends to get the better of him. He always said filming Kane was no miraculous feat, that if you spend a little time with a camera you can figure out ways to add trickery or other visuals to a scene.
What 'weikko' is ...( 5 months ago by fromthesidelines)
What 'weikko' is talking about, of course, was "The March Of Time" (originally a radio program), a monthly newsreel devoted to ONE subject, distinguished by the somewhat pompous overtones of narrator Westbrook Van Voorhis (also a mainstay of the radio show). Here, William Alland [who also played Jerry, the man who interviewed everyone to find out what "Rosebud" meant], captures Van Voorhis' style perfectly!

Tell your boyfriend is cool. I love this movie as well. This scene is amazing for they used old RKO stock footage and the film that was filmed by Welles and the cinimatographer Greg Toland was scratched on the ground by the editor. Amazing piece of film making.

Back in the early 1990s I saw Alland in an interview and he said that Welles asked Van Voorhis to do the voice-over for the "News on the March" segment, but he wanted $25,000. So Alland said, "I think I can imitate his voice", and Welles told him to go for it.
