It was actually video from one of the ordinary, hand held digital video camcorders that NASA frequently makes use of. The camera was smashed to pieces (no doubt when it tumbled in the cabin during break-up), and the tape was located in an area where the wreckage fell, mostly unspooled. What was found was then restored and released to the public.

i disagree..although the video is incredible on its own due to the fact that we got it back..i think the music conveys the power of the situation about to unfold and the immensity of the crew's mission on and off this world. the music is perfect.

Secondly, dear God, I can't express the emotion, all who live, and alln who are dead, once they understand, hail Columbia and her crew, and all that both represented. Will will never give up.
