Well, she wasn't really all that good a dancer, but she was so incredibly gorgeous and sexy and Latin that it was pretty easy for Astaire to use his genius to make her look as if she were the greatest dancer since Eleanor Powell.

I am a huge Astair and Gene Kelly fan, love the dance and I know that Astaire far prefered to dance with Rita as h said that dancing was so natural for hr, it is also her background prior to becoming a 'movie star' - just check out the movie 'Gilda' - she was an amazing and underestimated woman! I believe that she was not a drama queen and loved her family dearly, but she suffered from Alziemers, very sad end to her life.... sigh...

Rita was brilliant with astaire. She definitly held her own with him and you can she she is a confident independant dancer like astaire. Both share similar styles which complement each other. I think she is definitly up there as one of his best dance partners.

their dance is great, but not by far as great as with ginger! she knew how to interprete each single step, even with her mimicry!! watch her closely. rita is lovely and charming but not a really adequate dance partner to astaire. he might have liked her, because she probably did not interfere in his ambitions, as ginger sometimes did. by the way their teaming was much more successful than the one with hayworth. she just was closer to his mentality, thats why teir dancing lacks tension and temper

Too many comments here comparing Rita to Ginger, and it's an apples and oranges debate. I'd rather concentrate on the special time capsule that is this film. Rita was still in transition here; billed as a lead, but not yet the 'femme fatale' she would immortalize in films like GILDA and LADY FROM SHANGHAI. Here she is a sparkling dancer- breathtakingly lovely, still a tad Latina in this stylish rumba with Astaire. She had changed her surname, but had not yet lightened her hair. Just glorious.
