A short introductory theremin lesson to playing notes, executing dynamic vibratto, and dynamic volume with the theremin. Playing errors included to demonstrate how difficult it is to play the theremin well.
To get a closer look at the aereal finger technique, right click on the video, select "zoom in" set to desired zoom, and drag the image to where you can see the hand. Instructed by Thomas Grillo on Moog Etherwave Pro theremin. This is not a substitute for professional how to play videos, books,
or in-person instruction with a professional instructor. This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being
studied by me. Copyright 2007 Thomas Grillo

idk y, but i find this instrument very creepy and disturbing. it's just beyond my comprehension on how sum1 created this thing.
That creepy factor ... ( 4 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
That creepy factor is exactly why theremins were used in sci-fi, horror, and thriller films in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Theremins came into being in 1919 when a radio physicist by the name of Leon Theremin noticed a squeel that came from a tube he accidentally touched when working on a radio. Being a musician as well as a technician, he found a way to turn a noise into something musical.
If the pitch rod is ... ( 4 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
If the pitch rod is touched, the tone goes to the highest note permitted by the instrument's tuning. If far from the volume loop while doing this, the instrument plays at it's max volume.
If one leaves the room, and the instrument is set up right, there should be no sound as the zero beat zone goes well across much of the room. But, if the pitch feild is too small, then the zero beat, and negative zones will be too close to the theremin. It will go up in pitch and howl until you re
turn.

I do break into a bit of song from time to time in some of my lessons. Keep watching.
You can find theremins on the web at soundslikeburns, moogmusic, PAiA, Wavefront, and other online dealers of musical instruments. Also on e-bay too.

Could one not accomplish a trill by way of finger movements (switching quickly between two positions), as opposed to the wrist technique demonstrated?
Thanks for the ... ( 4 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
Thanks for the great question. Yes, you can execute trill by several different methods. The wrist method seems to be the easiest, and most reliable way to trill, while continuing to stay in tune as you proceed to other notes.
You can use a rappid opening, and closing of the fingers to the thumbs to trill, or even use an open handed wiggling of the fingers to trill. You can also simply amplify the vibrato widely, which is prettymuch what I do with the wrist method.

The Etherwave Pro, seen here, is discontinued, but originally cost $1300 new from Moogmusic. They currently make the Etherwave Standard for between $350 and 400.
Wavefront makes a Travelcase theremin for 800, and a Classic model for 1800. Soundlikeburns makes the B3 theremins between 152, 200, and 300.

Wow, thank you Sir for the fantastic explanation. Even people like me who already had Clara Rockmore's CDs could not fully grasp how this instrument functioned just from the written descriptions.

The theremin is the ... ( 19 hours ago by ThomasGrillo)
The theremin is the most difficult instrument int the world to play "well". As such, very few hafe mastered it. Shortly after it's public appearances in the 20s, and 30s in concert halls, the instrument nearly became completely forgotten, only to be used in about 40 movies in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Thanks to Robert Moog, and several other companies, the theremi is enjoying a comeback.

Amazing! You make it look easy. Do you have to listen for the right pitch, or is it through practice? It must take alot of concentration.
There is little ... ( 11 hours ago by ThomasGrillo)
There is little room for distraction.
You must do both, listen for the pitch carefully before playing it loudly, and you must also rely on muscle memory to play intuitively. it does take a lot of time, and practice to master these skills.

I could use a guitar accompanist from time to time. ;)
