I believe the satellite photos were sent down the network lines during the feed of various news stories for use by the local stations. The satellite observations were usually several hours old by the time they were broadcast.

If you are from the Cleveland TV viewing area and you knew TV 13 in Toledo, you would notice that 13 was Channel 3 and Channel 8 put together; Channel 3 because it was an NBC affiliate, and Channel 8 because it was owned by the Storer Broadcasting Company at the time.
