Oh, I dunno, they sounded plenty loud to me. Granted a lot of the preserved US steam is very 'long legged' compared to these mountain dwelling we're seeing here. I think it's merely your perception.

You're mistaking level railbed with a mountain grade. The UP engine is on largely straight and level grade, the engine on this video is climbing hard up a pretty heavy grade. Try comparing 'Virginian' or other east coast railroads.

I don't think you understand what we're viewing here. These are two mountain class engine with small diameter wheels. They going up a very steep grade. The UP engine you referenced isn't such an engine. A fairer comparison would be the eastern US such as 'Virginian' or other such coal and mountain railroads.

Yes I agree there. Both locos are working very hard indeed. Hauling a heavy ore train on such a steep gradient, is no peanuts. The firemen must be working pretty hard !

Thanks for anoth MAGNIFICENT video. For information of other Youtubers, QJs copied USSR practice which copied USA practice. There is a direct lineage from late US steam to these. Great, simple and rugged. See all this guy's videos. They are all five star!
