Yes it's originally done by Free. He gave Free their credit. I guess we are dating ourselves by talking about Free. I was raised on soul music but this was a jam that everyone listened to. I hven't heard a lot about Free except this song. Did they have other songs that grooved?

(Repeat from similar post having found this one)Five years ago now, WXPN was playing "Give Me an Inch," an early song he wrote. Over the years, I've found a few songs that could have hit if given a chance. Plenty of listeners do that, I'm sure. I thought at the time of how he made a career out of doing the same thing for the most part, having he talent(and connections) to give songs like the above another chance and claim them for his own. Eerily, two weeks after that appreciation, he was gone.
