Amtrak 93-2-3, August/September 1993 Train Trip
I went from Kansas City to Chicago to New Orleans to Dallas and back by rail via Amtrak in the late summer of 1993. After a full day in Chicago, I loaded my tired self onto my next leg of the journey -- to New Orleans on the City of New Orleans. The equipment I rode on was what Amtrak euphemistically called it's "heritage equipment' which is another phrase for the old hand me down equipment Amtrak inherited from the railroads when they quit doing passenger service. I do wish much of this old equipment was still on Amtrak, I sure miss the domes which I spent much time riding on during this leg of the journey. I don't miss the old smelly threadbare coaches though as Amtrak often lacked the funds to keep stuff up very well. I start out leaving the cavernous Union Station past the Amtrak yard and the yard holding the Burlington Northern E units. I got a good look at the sunset from the dome, then we pass the Illinois Central electrified commuter lines and into the Illinois darkness.
