i remember my next door neighbor called me to tell me Kurt Vonnegut had died. watchingtvisgood, you raise an excellent point which i had not considered before. by sheer fate the anna nicole smith fiasco coincided with his death. i wonder if that was why his death was scantly recognized at the time.

I need some advice. I'm 17 years old and I've read Slaughterhouse-Five, Breakfast of Champions, Player Piano, and Cat's Cradle, I'm just not sure I understand most of what's being said in his books. I love reading his books. They are fantastic. Maybe i should read them again... R.I.P. Kurt.

This has to do with experience. Near your late teens and early twenties, you will really start recognizing humanity's sadness. Educate yourself more, and read his books again in a few years. You will understand perfectly what he says.

rabok: I think Vonnegut is a great author too, but to assume he is greater than everyone else?
I don't like the idea of saying a particular author/artist/whatever is better than the rest.
I'm not saying that he isn't good. But he is only one of a great number of authors.

I concur. One can say with academic objectivity that an author is one of the greats. To say that someone is the best is just for fun. And just for my fun, I say Kurt is the best.

I travelled from Amsterdam to Dresden by bus. It was a long journey. I dozed off. At a certain moment the bus arrived. I woke up. The first streetsign I saw was Slachthofstrase. So it goes...

I wore a shirt I made from with a sharpie in memory of his death a year later and not even my teachers knew who Kurt Vonnegut was. It made me kind of angry because people laughed when they saw the shirt because it said "God Bless you, Mr. Vonnegut"; although I don't know why. But then, I realized whether they knew it or not, that that was the reaction he would want from such a statement. I only hope there is a heaven so I can meet him, and all my other heroes there.

A true master. A philosopher. We will one day, maybe not in my life time, study his works in philosophy courses as we often do Camus. Don't think so? Read A Man without a Country, Palm Sunday, and Fates Worse than Death. Genius. And thank you for this video. I get a big tear in each eye every time I watch. Kurt is up in heaven now.
