Everyone tried to make it seem like Gene & Fred had some kind of rivalry but they actually admired eachother and wanted to work together. It's unfair to compare them because they had completely different styles, even Gene said that he represented the working class and Fred the aristocracy..... Both the best in their own ways.... They both invented a style and it is their own!!!!

I really like that one too :) I thought that TCM would show all the Sinatra-Kelly movies since the collection just came out a couple months ago. Maybe I'll watch it when I get home tonight :)

Totally agree with you. Gene was so much more athletic and enthusiastic in his dancing, whereas Fred was suave and always seeking perfection. BOTH were outstanding performers!

This debate will go on long after WE'RE all dead. It's just personal taste, and I take Gene. Fred was the traditional tapper. Gene combined ballet with tap, and choreographed too. Fred could spin, Gene could jump. Fred was lithe, Gene could lift women with one arm. I don't think "An American In Paris" would have been Fred's thing (I can't see him in the skintight artist suit) as top hats and tails weren't Gene's thing. What a joy it is for us to enjoy both as they teach angels how to dance.

I know it's a matter of taste, but I always disliked how Gene danced. I know too, that he wanted to be know as "the working man's dancer", but you can see how Fred out classes him. I hated the way Gene always bowed his legs out and "muscled" all his moves, for the reason I suppose to be more "manley". But, Fred did everything, or so it would seem, easily, which is very difficult to do. Can you imagine how ballet would look if all the dancers made everything look "hard to do, mucled" like Gene?

Also, just watch how easliy Fred catches the harp, while Gence "mucles" it. The chinese Martial arts masters would say " to move is to seem not to move". That's Fred. Gene tries to show off, like it's difficult for him to do these things. Pehaps at times it was for him, he's not smooth and easy. I suppose if you want to see an athele struggle at something, it's ok, however if their the best, I'd rather not. And these is art, not some gorilla chacing after a ball for big bucks.

Fred is more subtle, while Gene has a lovely cartoony style, due to body construction more than skill. Gene has small facial features and long limbs, so showy gestures make more sense for him.
The dark, large-eyed Fred is able to get away with less movement and still clearly communicate emotion.
Neither is struggling, it's just a difference in style. These are two different men, the song points out - if they danced exactly the same, this narrative wouldn't make any sense!
