for those of you saying that you know people who visited north korea and came back reporting that it was "not that bad," it's probably because north korean tourism works by a system in which they only allow tourists/foreigners to view certain, SELECTED, spots of the capital and around it that are supposed to give the country a luxurious impression. The buildings are very well-constructed, but this was done purposely to mask the country's poor economy and deteriorating health/living standards.

try watching secret or "behind-the-scenes" footage shot by those who were successfully able to smuggle cameras into the outskirts of the capital. you'll see what i mean. and maybe try reading 'aquariums of pyongyang,' a memoir of a man who once was held in a concentration camp up there but was able to escape to south korea many years later.. very eye-opening

Only Western tourists (like Americans, DUH) are subject to that. Chinese, Russians, and others are not. They're also allowed to go around by themselves. I also know people who have worked in Chinese embassies in Sinijiu, across the river from China. They weren't on packaged tours.
