Nick Cohen criticises the new brand of British Liberal Left that simply has become fashionable ideology (Cohen briefly touches upon subjects such as anti-Americanism, cultural relativism, phobia of criticising Islamic fascism, etc) to adhere to.
As a person who likes to read books written by both the "rightist" like temporary neocon Hitchens and the "leftist" like Chomsky, I really enjoyed reading this Cohen's book that allowed me to have some critical look at my own beliefs on this issue. What's Left?: How Liberals Lost Their Way http:/

thats on top of the million killed during the 10 years of sanction, also there are a couple hundred thousand that have fled to neighbouring countries & 'internally displaced peoples'

"Islamic caliphate" - you mean like the Gulf states the USA & Co. support? Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and so on, all wonderful nations right?

I dont seem to recall there being any terrorists in Iraq prior to the US invasion & occupation
Oh my my. ... ( 8 months ago by nyomythus)
Oh my my. International islamic terrorism didn't start with the intervention in Iraq; which was not a sovereign nation but a district of the Middle east under U.N. supervision after Saddam's attempt to annex Kuwait. The vast majority of of radical Islam and their world wide supporters were against the war, yes; moderate Muslims and half of those of the free world saw it as an inevitable conflict.

do research before you throw "perhaps" figures in there. Corporate imperialism? let me guess... You must be unemployed.

Where to even begin to tackle self-delusion this profound? The 'perhaps' has to do with the fact that the occupying terrorist powers, led by the US, don't bother to count the number of Iraqis killed. You doubt the existence of corporate imperialism? Try reading a few books rather than slandering (fully employed) individuals you have never met.

do some sums. Count the numbers killed in the last decade by 'Islamic' terrorists. Now count the numbers killed by Western corporate imperialists. Quite a balance sheet, isn't it? You don't honestly believe the Iraq war was NOT about oil, do you?

occupying terrorist powers, led by the US ... slander ... read a book??? These are all good examples of projected delusion, which is almost always pathological. Cease and desist.

With so many right-wingers clearly foaming at the mouth to spark a global ethnic and/or holy war, I would think many on the left see themselves as the last thumb in the dyke. Hubris, maybe, but hardly astrophysics.

To those who state that terrorism increases as we respond to it, is your conclusion that we should therefore capitulate to it?
No respond to it ... ( 7 months ago by courseworkdue)
No respond to it correctly. fight the taliban by all means. Dont then pack up and go to Iraq when Bin laden is still free. Stop all help to the Saudi Wahabi regime. Dont prop it up.
What makes terrorism increase is 1 million dead iraqis who dont like the bin laden ideology.

Yes I'm all for that, especially Suadi Arabia. However, given your logic, that will increase terrorism.

stop taking like a cunt, terrorism was not any where till the usa and the jews started it,they are the problem, they are fighting for their own land,so we should leave them to it,but as for Britain your back bone has gone ,the white man is fucked now ,you let too many niggers in ,and they are taking over, you want to say great again you had better got off your fat white ass and stand up to the shit....

I hate when those with power, after exploiting and working us to slow deaths, after unfulfilled lives squandered serving them, must find quicker, military ways to KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE. THAT IS TERRORISM, AS FAR AS I CARE ABOUT THAT TERM. AND FUCKING FACE THIS FACT: ISRAEL AND THE US DO A LOT MORE OF IT THAN ANYBODY ELSE. THAT'S WHY THE REAL LEFT DRIFTS TOWARD SYMPATHY WITH PALESTINE. BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT SERVILE, GROVELLING, IMPOTENT, BUT POWER-WORSHIPING FUCKS LIKE NICK COHEN APPARENTLY IS.
My own latent ... ( 4 months ago by Tobacc0)
My own latent racism occasionally surprised and disturbed me and my jarred with my belief in meritocracy and scientific endeavor. But I think I allowed myself to be labeled. Rather, think of me as a "culturalist". I have no inkling as to the genetic merits of a Frenchman over a German, or an Indian over an Arab. Thinking this way offers great ease when (for e.g) criticizing the unusually high number of women who die in kitchen fire "accidents" in certain insular, conservative communities.

I read 'What's Left' a couple of weeks ago and whilst I do not not agree wth all of Cohen's points - the rejection of ideas pertaining to the existence of a ruling class hegemony and the psycho analytic concept of 'the other' his work largely stands up. Yeah we are all hezbollah now ha ha, what a pile of shite. Livingstone rejects the BNP but entertains the most fascistic of Islamic scholars. The Left needs to wake up and soon. No wonder the poor are voting for scum like the BNP.
