when i was little i would just watch it for the cartoon sequences and pretty colors. now i'm grateful that i'm old enough to appreciate the beauty of the orchestral music and concertos.
(but i still like the pretty colors...=3)

the layers of shadows complement the layers of the melody; independent of the orchestral arrangement (wasn't it originally for organ?)

It's completely unbelievable how they made a film like this during this period of time, and ESPECIALLY during the war period. But the animation is just beautiful... and the sound incredible. There never ever will be a film like Fantasia ever again... it's just the best.

such a great song...But a fucking horrible conductor. Watch the opening and the major swells. There is no subdivision what so ever. Prime example is the low brass opening. I mean i know these are professionals but the low brass played several notes with no count at all. Either this is an animated conductor or that brass section has ESP with each other to all come in at the same time.

Ironically, I like this version. I don't know if it's so much the conductor or his/the musicians' interpretation of the piece, but I far prefer the deliberate, slower version to the one I've heard before that sounds like everyone's on speed and they just want to hurry up and get it over with.
To each his own. ;)

the orchestra is good enough that they don't need him to conduct all the beats. remember they've played this several times and probbly could do it with their eyes closed. i think not needing to conduct the beats is a characteristic of a good conductor personally. :-)

at 3:02 the trombones go out to 7th position for a Bb! what the heck? that is not where that note is on the horn at all! i've always been a little confused by that. (I have perfect pitch so i can tell the notes and i've played trombone for 8 years and that is certainly NOT where a Bb is) lol sorry to get technical but maybe someone can laugh with me :-)

I used to watch "Fantasia" all the time as a child. This was one of my favorite parts. And, if I remember correctly, "Night on Bald Mountain" gave me nightmares! (Couldn't stop watching it, though)
I actually prefer the original version of "Toccata and Fugue" (played with organs), but this one's great, too.
I second that.
