THE NAMESAKE is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great
pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage. Even Gogol's name represents the family's journey into the unknown.

Why wasn't this film nominated for any Oscar? I mean, it got great reviews right? Was it because it got foreign actors? but in that case, La vie un rose was a french film, and it was nominated too this year.

I went to the library to see if they had this book but it was already checked out. I was pretty excited about reading it too. This kind of reminds me of Siddhartha. The whole journey and self-discovery theme.

This movie is without a doubt a masterpiece. Kal Penn's best performance, and even though I've only seen bollywood movies by Irfan Khan, I believe this is also his best performance. Put simply, this movie is and will always remain a masterpiece.

What a shit movie. It completely rips off other movies like "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner." But with a poor man's actor Kal Penn. Who is soooo gay, like everyone was in Superman Returns - Except for Frank Langella. Ugh! When will these Asians or Indians Dot heads have an original thought in their caste system.
See better movies don't waste your time with this garbage. Type in Indian Thriller to see a much better indian movie. Although, no Indian movies are original. They steal EVERYTHING!
