The most sensible comments here really illustrate Thomas Jefferson's saying that 'France is everyone's second country' (thanks for this quotation!). As a French, I am acutely aware of my country's flaws and mistakes throughout history — and altogether I can't accept unfair judgements about it. France is a sort of ideal, to which many French are not up... That's well expressed in this great American movie.

Early in this clip, for about 1 second, you get a glimpse of "la tarte", sitting alone with her drink, wretched. You know who's bed she's been in all night. Then the song begins, & we next see her singing the lines about 'the ferocious enemy soldiers' "qui viennent jusque dans nos bras" (into our arms)- exactly what she's been up to -- "to slit the throats of our sons" etc. She experiences true repentance, and makes a committment to live a better future life. Powerful song. Great movie.

people who go on about what france did or didn't do in 1940 forget what happened to france in WWI, when half the nation's youth died at verdun and other places. the french just felt they couldn't go through that again, being battered to death by the germans. here in england, most people wanted to roll over as well, right up till 1939. it was only churchill who turned things round and sort of rallied people to the idea that it was possible to take on the nazis - and live.

Yes, morale was quite low throughout Europe. What the Americans don't understand is that they just came out of the Great War, the most horrid spectacle to occur on European soil. Nobody wants to go through that again, and they tried to avoid it at all costs. When the US is ravaged by invading armies again, to be faced with war 20 years after, we'll talk.
