Albert was invited to perform his 'spit art' on the Jimmy Kimmel Show recently. We couldn't invite all of you, but I brought a camera so you could eventually be there with us (now maybe).
That's CC Sheffield, lead singer of Le Rev, talking to Ana about pimplywimp. I also threw in a rap that was a bit rushed but still thug for life.

thank you jazzy, once I pissed one of those faces that looks like an old man with a bread from one direction, and a kid with a hat from the other. I charged money to get a picture with it. Thats how I bye me art supplies. Fruit juices, water, and a tough of beer for color. Word to some mothers out

actually being an artist is when society accepts you as an artist. painting can be viewed as just as spit. if you are in a museum does that make you an artist? ever hear of r. mutt and the ready made?

I think there is a vast cleavage between " getting it" and thinking you " get it". Like the proverbial blonde saying she's interesting, as compared to being interesting. I think "getting it" is more akin to being born with "it". That is if you're ever going to be in the vanguard of what is next. Otherwise your just "doing" art. ( and variables)

not to be misinterpreted, take jeff koons for instance. he doesnt even create his 'artwork'. he has a staff. the ideas of art and artist are constantly being challenged. if you cant call water being spilled out a mouth into a picture, performance art. what do you call it?

" getting it" only has to do with what I think an artist is. Not what you guys are doing. I'm not knocking your performance. But in the scheme of where art is going, you have to know that this is not necessarily original. If one acknowledges there influences, rather than copy there influences. Well then there is a big difference.

there has all ways existed people with real imagination. More so than the masses. As with all other traits, or god given talents. The artist mind must first have imagined, before the science mind can make. You've heard this before. So every kid portage that plays a piano does not become a Mozart. As does not every artist advance the universe with there concepts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not truly critiquing your work, that would be pretentious, But do you know in what "context" your metaphors are in? How palatable is shit in a can? or a latex enema regurgitated Pollock? I mean all this has been done. where do you stand?

i'm not the artist. i am the brother of albert reyes. he doesnt only make spit art. it just happens to be marketable on television. it was a short clip from a much longer video. he has a show in ampersand gallery in sf right now. i'm all for conceptual art. i dont stand on art, i swim.

Hmmm... I challenge you to find me one example of truly original art in the last 50 years (or more). All art is built upon the influence of what came before it. Just because he doesn't explicitly cite his influences doesn't mean he isn't aware of them. Frankly, I don't expect artists to always cite their influences. That's why we work visually instead of becoming writers. I'm not defending the spit art - I actually find it quite stupid & boring, but I will defend his right to call it 'Art'.

Society's acceptance has nothing to do with your status as an 'artist' or not. Society's acceptance can (but doesn't necessarilly) lead to success, financial or otherwise, but the generally accepted criteria for recognition as a professional artist is recognition from your peers (i.e. other artists) as such. Some of the world's greatest artists were never accepted by society as anything but madmen.
