He gives a verry good impression of how Chaliapin (tired of singing, Chaliapin gave terrible performances in the 1930's)and Tauber (painfull arms, he suffered of rheumato
ïd arthritis) behaved during recitals. The Tauber is fantastic

This guy's amazing. Imagine someone with his talent today taking off the three tenors and, say, Hvorostovsky ... it'd be hilarious!
Difference with ... ( 1 year ago by jozefsterkens)
Difference with yesterday singers, everybody knew Tauber & Chaliapin, today a small amount of people know Hvorostovsky even my young collegues at the office don't know the 3 tenors,
their age is between 25 an 35 years, at 58 I'm considered a dinosauer and can't talk with them.
The 1980's are considered the pre-history. When I talk of an longplaying disc they don't know what that could be (all are ingeneers).
Yeah, that had ... ( 1 year ago by sorbino9)
Yeah, that had crossed my mind. But for those of us who are familiar with such singers it'd still be bloody funny :-) By the way, my wife is a Russian engineer and only knows of Hvorostovksy since last week when I showed her a video, now of course she's a fan.

It also occurred to me mention someone more contemporary, but I couldn't think of any present day singers with enough personality to parody. How sad is that ...

I saw him in France and also winning the "Cardiff singer of the world" in 1989. Big voice with little nuances, a sort of Tita Ruffo. Best in Evgeni Onegin.

Stanley Holloway also recorded impersonations of Chaliapin and Chevalier on an early Decca record in my collection: and Afrique was famous for his Tauber impersonations.

You will notice how "Chaliapin" announces a selection from his little book. The audience would be quite impressed with the HUNDREDS of songs listed in the booklet, implying that Chaliapin had ALL of them in his immediate repertoire, and that he could sing any of them at any time! In truth, he usually sang only a relatively small handful of these songs, over-and-over with different audiences. Quite the showman!

Very interesting. And he himself sings very well! That's what's most interesting about these "ancient" videos. ;-)
