hehehe yeah ASTiGBA....I feel for you. Me too, I wish I was born in Zamboanga than in Manila so I could speak broken Spanish !! I think they are awesome and they could actually understand the Latinos here in Canada or in the States. Chavacanos are fascinating hehe. BTW, the vocalist is hot !!! ...They dont spell it in Spanish because they are not Spanish people...they are proud CHAVACANOS who keep it real instead of trying hard to spell Spanish words just to please other people. No offense my dear but although the country of Spain has great influence on them, they still spell words based on their DIALECT and not pure Spanish language ..... and we should respect that because its their dialect and that's what it is. VIVA LOS CHAVACANOS !!!

Chavacano is not a Broken Spanish! Chavacano is Creole Language(Spanish Based) Chavacano Orthograpy doesnt spell as it is in Austronesian but as it is to its origin! example: Cerrado, Abre, Calambre, ahora, agujero, Hojas, alambre, caliente, acerca, lenguaje, no hay mas y etcetera..

Venzshruck - Some people on some sites referred Chavacano as "broken Spanish" which made us thought so.Now,since you are a Chavacano (and you know better),you can explain us as briefly as you can the difference between "broken Spanish" and "Spanish Creole".I've seen some sites about this topic but the articles are too long.Anyway,regardless to the right answer,my point is to respect Chavacanos on how they write their words even if the words does not exactly spell the same as the Spanish words.

The reason is because Chavacano is basically a spoken language rather than a written one. Hence, the bastardized spellings and hence, the 'broken', 'Spanish', 'dialect' branding. But Chavacano is not broken, not Spanish, and neither a dialect. It is a living, evolving language that is feared to be losing its identity because of the infiltration of English words, less use of Spanish words that make most of its vocab, and more Tagalog infiltration.

Chavcacano has its own grammar, spelling rules, etc. And yes, as a rule, words of Spanish origin should be spelled in the Castillian manner. It is only in sticking to the rules that we can preserve our beautiful language. Thanks!

Correct me if I misunderstood because if the answer is yes, then how come many Chavacanos do not spell their Spanish originated words in Castilian manner? Do you think the schools there should do something about it so that people there would spell the words correctly?...or maybe they dont care because like you said, Chavacano is spoken rather than written...

Yes. Words of Spanish origin should be spelled in the Castillian manner. This is at least a standard rule in the Zamboangue
ño dialect. For example, nuay should be no hay. However, even Rizal who spoke Ermiteño did not write 'ñor' but 'ñol' in his el Fili (shows the Chinese influence in the Ermiteño dialect). Chavacano is very fluid and flexible. To answer your questions, lemme say this: Chavacano is more a spoken l
anguage than a written language.

I should have written "non-standard rule". Now the reason why some (or most) speakers do not spell words of Spanish origin in Spanish manner is because they do not know how to do it. Its basically telling us chavacanos are not latinos! Now why do we hefta use Spanish spellings in writings? Because Chavacano especially Zamboangue
ño has modes. The formal mode which is used in writing uses most Spanish vocab and spellings. The familiar and common modes are used in speaking. Getz?
