You could definitely make a solid case for Freddie Mercury in the popular music world. He was incredible.
But there's no way you can compare even the best rock singer to Pavarotti. He was on an entirely different playing field. The man once received a world record 165 curtain calls after a single performance. You might say that Freddie Mercury was the best minor league pitcher ever, but Pavarotti was Cy Young, Roger Clemens, Tom Seaver and Greg Maddux all rolled into one.

And even the minor league that would include Freddie Mercury and Elton John would be AA because neither one of them had moved up to the AAA level of jazz/standards like Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, etc. Singing jazz and opera is much more challenging than singing rock and pop.

Well I haven't heard Elton John singing any opera songs yet, or any songs differing from his own. He probably can though. But if you look at Freddie Mercury, he sang Opera, Rock, Jazz(Live at Wembley),... If you click on my profile you'll see one video I uploaded where he shows that he can take on many vocal ranges.

But you must understand that I'm a big fan of Elton too (else I wouldn't be on this page) and that I've got a lot of 80's idols. Personally I think that the nowaday music is totally wrong. No-one can sing live anymore without lipsynching.
Oh btw, Elton and Freddie were very good friends, he even visited him during his last moments, and Freddie bought him a painting, which he got delivered a few days after he passed away.

Isn ´t that a very generalising thing to say? "Jazz and opera is more challenging than rock and pop". Different styles demand different approaches and different teqniques. That´s all.

Frank Sinatra wasn't really that great of a singer, though, from a technical standpoint. For example, Freddie Mercury definitely had a larger vocal range, as well as a stronger voice.
You're basing your opinion on something arbitrary and no necessarily true (i.e. that jazz is harder to sing than *insert genre here) and on how prolific the singer was, rather than out and out talent.

Freddie had a better overall voice, I think. Granted, he lost some of his high range too as he got older, but Elton's voice went to absolute crap after his surgery in... 1986 I think it was?
Freddie's voice was pretty consistent right to the end, whereas Elton sounded like a new (and inferior (compared to his old voice) if you ask me) singer after his surgery.
Then again, surgery or no, Elton still had a decent voice up until the mid 90's, so maybe Freddie's would've gone downhill, too.

I agree. Elton John brings such incredible energy to the stage, I've seen him live, and the show was amazing. Even in his 60's, he's "Still standing stronger than he ever did". Great man, legendary artist.
