Leone Magiera, who directed this performance, revealed in his 2008 memoirs, Pavarotti Visto da Vicino, that the performance was prerecorded weeks earlier. "The orchestra pretended to play for the audience, I pretended to conduct and Luciano pretended to sing. The effect was wonderful," he wrote.

what i want to know is how does one "pretend" to play a violin? or for that matter, any symphony instument? i have been playing a violin for years and don't see how one could fake it. also, as a professional musician i have a hard time finding that the orchestra would fake playing.

i forgot to tell you naysayers that i was there in torino for the games and if he faked it he sure fooled me. only with the lord,s help could he have done this. besides everyone here will agree that it's a gift to be able to sing like that-but it takes true unmeasurable talent to fake a masterpiece like nessun dorma.

My question is, as a dear fan of Il Maestro, Why would you argue that he lip sync'd this or that he didn't. It doesn't matter! It was essentially his aria (that and Che Gelida) Why not just let this be a warm memory that we hold dear of our beloved Pavarotti?

i have to say, that if you truely believe he is lip syncing this song you are an imbicile...you can clearly see him struggling to get the notes out, and he was far to proud a man for that.

Oops, not performance, but singing was pre-recorded with the orchestra. This was to avoid any complications during the Olympics because of his poor health.
