A solo performance by the master of the 8-string guitar. The guitar is being fed through a Leslie cabinet to get that sweet, organic tone.

I was very dissapointed in his playing -
very old fashioned and derrivative-
It is not new to juggle more old stuff at the smae time...
but add more strings and organ tone.
The arenas are always filled by morons cheering and whistling for more tricks-
didn't George Benson do this shtick already in 1977?
The guy's good - ...( 2 months ago by jaybodonoghue)
The guy's good - period. As much as we love to over-analyze this one particular performance (or the select few we've seen live), fact of the matter is - this guy's on the Jazz A-List, and getting better everyday. We should all hope to be as involved in cultural preservation in jazz (assuming we're all musicians here).

Hunter is a young guitarist w interesting potential-
but it is not yet realized- and may never be.
The simple idea of trying to do bass / guitar at the same time- is not new- it exists throught out the guitar hand jazz histoy-
Hunter is missing tone- core rudiment of muscianship.
Guarnteed that his direction will simplify-
Acrobatcs are basically meaninglesss-
CH slow down and listen-
Juggling bass/ guitar and whatever he can squeeze in there- is irrelevant.
vibrato / tone? - time will tell.
Ok first of all ...( 1 month ago by Pprovo1)
Ok first of all amsterjam, you have completely overlooked what Charlie is trying to emulate here. If you have ever read anything about him you'de know his style of playing and his tone is based around emulating a hammond organ (note the H&K Tube Rotosphere in his guitar). This man is an amazing guitar player and jazz guru. You obviously have a thing to learn from him considering you think his virtuosic playing is meaningless and irrelevant. Juggling bass/guitar? This man CONTROLS bass/guitar.
Why emulate Hammond ...( 1 month ago by amsterjam66)
Why emulate Hammond Organ?
It is the vocabulary of GUITAR that needs to be developed-
Trying to sound like a Hammond is silly during the era of sampling and I think it demostrates a misdirection-
I went to see CH at Central Park '06?
And it was even worse- than this-
don't get me started-
Back to the drawing board and let us hear touch of strings
not the sound of Keyboard from 1957- very useless-
But this is not a personal attack-
I think he has potential-
that is the point- stop playing bass
Ok, well you are ...( 1 month ago by Pprovo1)
Ok, well you are entitled to your opinion, but there are many of us out here who like the sound of the hammond organ. I personally think his sound is innovative and hip. I live in New Orleans and he has pioneered a sound of fusion funk/jazz that is really popular around here. He has already reached his potential. You can't take Charlie Hunter and make him into what you want him to be, you have to like him for what he is. His unique guitar style is what makes him so special.
And I'm sorry but ...( 1 month ago by Pprovo1)
And I'm sorry but your last comment appalled me so much I have to make another response. You said that sounding like a hammond organ is a misdirection?? HOW CAN ANY MUSIC BE MISGUIDED WHATSOEVER?? Does ALL music have to go in the SAME direction?? The answer is NO!! The revival of the hammond organ sound is refreshing and is definitely not a misdirection. Do yourself a favor and try to be open minded about things before passing IGNORANT judgment on something you know nothing about.

The funky sound of aHammond organ is very nice-
when played on an actual Hammond Organ-
by the likes of Jimmy Smith etc.
CH has a long way to go.
I simply think he is currently derivative and way off track-
check back-;
He will simplify- as he might yet approach originality-
The George Benson Schtick is just not my thing-
unless done by G.B-
Now if i only could add 19 more strings or
perhaps overdub (lol)
chill- and start listening to Lou Reed.
I get the Jimmy ...( 1 month ago by Pprovo1)
I get the Jimmy smith sound from Jimmy Smith. I get the George Benson sound from George Benson. But geuss what, I get the CHARLIE HUNTER sound from geuss who? Charlie Hunter! You cannot judge music by calling his playing acrobatic and meaningless. He isn't trying to impress you with his skills, he just happens to be an awesome musician and plays what he wants to...

somehow - i hear the crowd even in this video
egging him on and cheering for ridiculous things-
like scat singing Georbe Benson-
or juggling a few bad sounding bass notes-
cheer him for finding something original-
that is the point.
IF you cheer him for Hammond Organ tone and scat singing-
Imagine if he really found an original thread-
that is what the guitar vocabulary needs-
not more Benson and Hammond-
over and out- think about it
froma a historic perspective.

Who designed his guitar? those slanted frets in order to meet the needs of bass and regular guitar fretting is quite brilliant. Got to love innovation and skill.

It's a Novax guitar. As you can see, Ralph Novak is a very conservative luthier so it's a perfect fit for a master conformist as Charlie ;-)

Personally i think ...( 1 month ago by primarydominant)
Personally i think Charlie Hunter has come the closest i've heard to really impersonating a hammond organ sound. In terms of cornering scatting and playing as a george benson thing, benson rarely if ever uses his falsetto the way CH does. In my opinion, to regard originality on the surface analysis of "someone else did this once" then just about guitarist talking on this thing would be royally f***ed. Hunter's touch and approach are off-the-wall and fresh and his own voice shines through

Dude screw you and your historic perspective. Guess what? Charlie Hunter's not only an amazing musician but a SHOWMAN! And as for an original thread, HE'S PLAYING AN 8-STRING GUITAR! And the complexity of his technique and his musical prowess is apparently far beyond anything you can understand. Over and out.
