I think 'prepared' just means there is some kind of mute resting on the piano strings to keep them from resonating.. It gives it a very 'oriental' sound.. as always her voice is chilling. Great clip.!!

Exactly. My memory of the events was that she cathartically destroyed the old piano with a hammer just after recording Bells For Her on it, so it can never be played on that same piano. It was one in the church basement where her father was a pastor IIRC.

If memory serves (from the Really Deep Thoughts mailing list in the mid-90's), Tori destroyed an upright piano by removing the casing, muffling some of the strings, then stuck thumbtacks through the hammers to produce this vaguely harpsichord like song. Fascinating hollow and rich sound, she wrote Bells For Her for it, this is the best performance of it that I've heard. Thanks for keeping it online, YouTube.
