Stingray (1964 -- 1965) is a children's marionette television show, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and produced by AP Films for ATV and ITC Entertainment. Its 39 half-hour episodes were originally screened on ITV in the UK and syndication in the US. The scriptwriters included Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, Alan Fennell (who went on to write for Thunderbirds), and Dennis Spooner. Barry Gray composed the music, and Derek Meddings was the special effects director.

"Stand by for action! We are about to launch Stingray! Anything can happen in the next half-hour!" These words, accompanied by a montage of action scenes, get each episode off to a rousing start. Stingray, a highly sophisticated submarine built for speed and manoeuvrability, is the flagship of th
e World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASP), a 21st century security organisation based at Marineville in the year 2065, located somewhere near the west coast of the United States. In case of an attack the entire city can be lowered into the ground on hydraulic jacks. Marineville is 20 miles (32 km) inl
and, and Stingray is launched from the base's "Pen 3" through a tunnel leading to the Pacific Ocean. "Action Stations", "Launch Stations" and "Battle Stations" are sounded not by sirens but by recordings of Native American-style drumming (composed and recorded by series composer Barry Gray). The pi
lot of Stingray is the square-jawed Captain Troy Tempest (modelled on James Garner), accompanied by Dixie navigator "Phones", so called because of his skill at interpreting hydrophone bleeps. (His real name, George Sheridan, is referred to in the show's publicity but never spoken on-screen). Troy an
d Phones board Stingray by sitting in their command chairs which are lowered into the submarine on long poles. They take their orders from the crusty wheelchair-bound Commander Sam Shore, whose daughter Atlanta Shore is also a WASP operative and enamoured of Troy.

I never watched "Stingray" but I was curious since I have enjoyed the other series. Was "Stingray" done before or after "Thunderbirds"? It's just that some of the elements look very similar.

I watched both Stingray and Thunderbirds as a kid. I loved them then and still do. I was real happy when I found the DVDs on Amazon. Stingray started in 1964, Thunderbirds 1965, till they both ended, they ran parallel.

Yeah, Gerry Anderson and Co started with Supercar in 1960, then went on to Fireball XL5 (1962), Stingray (63-4), Thunderbirds (64-5), Captain Scarlet (67) and Joe 90 (68). All I can say is wow, though i never really got on with Supercar or Joe 90 this IS my childhood.

And remember kids, don't drive a big ship and drink! The original say no to drunk driving film! Thanks for posting these, I haven't seen them since the mid 70's when we used to watch them on channel 44 out of Chicago when it was still a real channel and the aired a ton of classic shows like this one. Too cool, retro marionette TV. Seems so cheesy now, probably did back then too but when you're a kid you don't care so much. Still entertaining though, gotta love it. "STAND BY FOR ACTION!!!!"

The pale green skin ... ( 4 months ago by 777edward)
The pale green skin of Marina reminds me of the aliens from UFO. And as always Anderson was very sexist, almost all of his series and films had husband-wife problems, or a feminine power play as here with Atlanta and Marina.

I'd like to see The Pilot Episode again, when Marina helped rescue Troy Tempest and Phones from the clutches of the evil Lord Titan and was herself invited to join the WASP team - I only ever saw it once, many, many moons ago now.

Look closely at 8:18 lol, it isnt phones picking up the map, its a stage hand probs, they're wearing different coloured clothes and the hands are real, as opposed to the puppet hands phones has, still i loved this show and nothing could change that lol, still funny though...

Gerry Anderson should be given a knighthood for his services to Kids' tv. He is a true genius and pioneer of sci-fi. IMO

Kid's entertainment ... ( 3 weeks ago by InfiniteMushroom)
Kid's entertainment has fallen so far since the days of Stingray, Thunderbirds, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and other shows designed to stimulate scientific fantasy in kids. Back then, everything was almost within reach and we had no doubt that a great Golden Age would be there when we became adults. Nowadays... all kids see is mind-numbing insipid entertainment designed to stupify them. All they have to look forward to is an impoverished dystopian hell to become adults in.
that is quite ... ( 2 days ago by billabongodrum)
that is quite common in supermarionation stuff gerry anderson says it's because they couldn't get the puppet hands to do things like picking things up
