Cleverly arranged layers of light and shade, with wonderful textures (acoustic guitar, honky tonk piano, mandolin). This is a musical painting, a higher form of Art. I think it's a pity that today's music doesn't have anywhere near this type of appeal - we just had it so good in the 60's.

I think what happened was, she had the affair with Denny, which John found out about. Denny asked her to go away with him, she said no. Tried to work it out with John, THEN she started up with Gene Clark ( including the blowing kisses at the concert incident) so that now both John and Denny were miserable, and that's when they all kicked her out.

I don't think it was actually a matter of Michelle not being able to be heard over Cass, John Phillips arranged most of his songs with Cass or Denny in mind as the lead, occasionally for himself, too. I think he pretty much sussed out that Michelle's voice was not really meant to carry a song as the lead, for the most part. I've heard him say in old interviews, this was one he specifically arranged so Michelle could have a moment in the front of the group.

Talk about a beautiful song. Absolute masters of harmony. This song and "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys are 2 of the best examples of harmonizing perfection. Man these people could sing so well together!!
