"Little Moe" Todd Graves explains Moe Norman's golf swing. He compares it to the swings you see on tour every week, and goes through the basic fundamentals of Moe's swing and the why's behind Moe Norman's ball striking genius.
The Graves Golf Academy is the world's foremost authority on the swing of Moe Norman, a man regarded by many as the world's greatest ballstriker. Moe Norman told a reporter in an interview that Todd Graves, aka "Little Moe", was the ONLY person who could teach his (Norman's) swing. Moe's quote,
"(Todd) is only one who really knows it. Really knows it. Other guys just think they do."

I tried his swing today along with my traditional golf swing. The Moe Norman swing generated a great deal of power and consistancy. I think the club head speed was greater than a two plan system. But I found that after I hit the ball with a traditional golf swing, the ball continued to elevate well after hitting. With the Moe Norman swing, the ball seemed to die off quickly, but because of the power at impact, both balls went about the same distance. I could not hit irons with Moe's swing.

It wasn't until I read George Pepper's excellent "Secret of Golf" that I ever heard of Mr. Norman. Since, I've been obsessed with his story. His unorthodox style clashed with the PGA ..much like his contemporary, Count Yogi. Their swings are more similar than any other two. The whole idea of simpleness works. Both stressed the mental control of the clubface with as Yogi said, "an infallible mental routine". Moe knew that well. Thanks for posting a terrific teaching aid.

Moe was absolutely great, but this is the first time I've seen his action and it's not as odd as I'd thought - some aspects were not really new. The commentary talks about leverage but that's just wrist break which was, and is, quite standard. Also the idea of having the left arm and shaft in a straight line is not new - lots of pros teach that.

This single axis idea does look very good to me from the accuracy point of view. I just tried it and the accuracy was good but it seemed to restrict wrist break a bit in the backswing and I seemed to lose distance. Did Moe hit the ball as far as other pros or was he a short hitter?

At age 65, Moe's driver club head speed was measured at 105 MPH. That would equate to an approx. distance of 265-275 with today's technology.

Thank you very much indeed for your reply. Wow - that's a great clubhead speed for a 65 yr old! A 265-275 drive is pretty much a modern tour pro average I think, or nearly so. I'm starting to get very enthusiastic about all this! Can't quite tell on the video but looks as if Moe uses a two-handed grip not overlapping. Is this true?

In the video, Moe is using a 10 finger grip, which he switched to late in his life (mid 60's). Throughout his early and competitive years, he used an overlapping grip.

i was told or seen that on the back swing your left heel could come up slightly and on the follow through the right heel should come up as it does with most of the pros like woods or hogan, I'm confueed. How can i tell if i'm swinging on the same plane?

Same....dead straight every time. Moe's swing you are seeing simply swings each club in the bag on the plane the club is designed to be hit on. Very efficient and highly effective.

I went to the store and tried a hybrid....I was getting around 143 yds and 70 mph club speed. Someone showed me this swing and instantly I started getting 160 yds and a club speed of 78-80 mph. Constant for 30-40 shots. It works wonders.

The feet are part of his secret. He is the only one that has that foot action. It isn't the whole secret, but it is part of it. Watch every other top player's swing, and I guarantee you will not see anyone else with that footwork. He was the straightest there ever was, and maybe ever will be.
