Can you show me the overhead one? I positively love the distinct sound that one makes. Also, is the cow whip your using the preferred one? I just have the basic 7 foot long commercially available whip (aka the standard one people buy as a joke on Hallowe'en) but I haven't been able to make it make cracking sounds since the tip broke off (a valid reason not to crack whips indoors..)

The most important part of a whip is the tapering and balance of it. I've seen 4-plait whips that crack better than 16-plait whips because the 4-plait whip had a better taper and balance. However, with taper and balance the same, a higher number of strands usually means a tighter action but less durability.

Check out the instructional video by bernie46. It shows the cracks you're looking for. I already have a video just about the snake killer, if you take the time to look at my other videos. For a whip, I'd recommend a 6-8 ft bullwhip.
