I think he should just be more upfront about it, instead of cleverly hiding in a pseudo hetero shadow just to sell books. His stories are anecdotes, and are "article length" for easy publication individually in magazines. So a person who is exposed to one story from a book of many may assume his opinion is coming from a hetero place. But it's not. This is a gay "modus operandi" isn't it. Ellen did the same thing, waiting till her TV show became really popular, then coming all the way "out."

bloggerjoe, if you honnestly think David is hiding his homosexuality in any way at all, you have clearly never read one of his books.
it may not be made explicit in every single story, but he in no way leaves out information about his partner, Hugh, nor his experiences as a young gay boy growing up in the south. but just as a story about his french home with Hugh obviously points out his homosexuality, a humorous essay about the stadium pal doesn't really require a gay disclaimer.
