Steady on - this is just one interpretation of a good song. The conductor/arranger has revised the music for Mel and he is giving his version of the lyrics. It's different to The Carpenters' version, certainly, but songs aren't written to be played just one way! I like both versions equally, for different reasons, and it's nice to have this one here for contrast.

I've never heard his version, though I am a great admirer of his undeniable talent. It was such a great loss when he died so young. I particularly liked his version of 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square'. Very different to Dame Vera Lynn's but just as good! John.

I'm a little confused - isn't this exactly what I said? I like this song very much, and defended it with some reason. Now, if you're going to make empassioned remarks about what someone else has written, for heaven's sake make sure you understand what they're saying. John.

Ladies & gents! The Great Mel Torme! Hitting that smooth last note was brilliant!
Well, I've just ...( 5 months ago by AllenMize)
Well, I've just read all of the comments on this video...for those of you who don't know, Mel was a great arranger as well as Singer, Drummer and wrote an autobiography(It Wasn't All Velvet), and a novel...He appeared on the J. Garlan show many times as HE WAS THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR of the show...wrote all of the special material Judyperformed on the show...and appeared whenever they couldn't line up another guest....There is a superb album he did with Cleo Laine a couple of years his illness.
That last note.... ...( 5 months ago by makthnife)
That last note....not only does his tone waver but it has nothing to do with the song; pure masterbation. Even the smug look on his face says this isn't expression of mood or genuine feeling or even tone; its showing off. Just the opposite at the top where he ran over the first line to get it out of the way.
Torme was uber-talented, he just didn't always know how to use that talent.

What's everyone so raw about? Torme is obviously a BRILLIANT song stylist, performer and star. What a rare and wonderful gift he was, and is. So glad I got to see him in concert before he passed! May he live on for the next generation.
I came to find this ...( 4 months ago by Mischeaux61)
I came to find this video specifically to see how long he holds that last note. I know on the recording with Rich it seems like forever! I timed him here, 20 seconds which doesn't SOUND all that impressive, but I know I couldn't do it. His intonation is dead on, not to mention that this note is obviously at the top of his range, thus making it more difficult to sustain. Major kudos for this performance, he's wonderful.

I don't know when Mel did this in relation to when the Carpenters did it, but this pales in comparison. I sort of hope this was before Karen's version, that way Mel was just singing it, rather than trying to come up under the tidal wave known as Karen. Mel's a great singer, though.

Mel Torme explained ...( 3 months ago by binkyboobosh)
Mel Torme explained that he based his entire career on that of Nat King Cole. He has the style, humility and phrasing ..and those lush arrangements. Both were great, great entertainers and musicians..and perfectionists.
