Yet another example of how bad early disco was. Another group that used sunshine pop and mellow gold type vocals, with philly soul (totally watered down by this point)backdrop. Totally stripped of any soul whatsoever. Hues corp w/ "Rock the boat" was similar.

This used to be the Theme song for the Mary Mason Show a talk show on WHAT in Philly back in the 70's. She used the instumental version of the song.

This song was played by d.j. Craig Reed at The 70's Party's in Dallas. I heard it on oldies 95.3 Rolla/Cuba yesterday. This is an awesome song. Like a fine diamond. Long live the Black Byrds.
No, dude. Do us all ...( 2 weeks ago by Odawg96)
No, dude. Do us all a favor and leave the funk to the experts. None of the people that liked the Blackbyrds ever considered their music "disco." Maybe light funk or soul. You're one of those folks that can't distinguish "disco" from real soul or funk music. Leave the funk and soul to those of us who know the music best. Clearly, you DON'T.
Hmm..lets see. ...( 2 weeks ago by soundsfromnothing)
Hmm..lets see. they had a similar vocal style to Hues Corp, who were influenced by 5th Dimension(think Elevator song "Up Up and away".) OF COURSE you don't consider them disco. Don't want 2 ADMIT that you like Sugar coated pop? If you think thats real soul or funk, then you really need to go back & listen 2 James Brown, Mayfield/The impressions, EARLY Kool & the gang, Baby Huey, etc. People listenin to THIS song back then, were no different than kids listenin' to the weak rap styles nowadays.
Naturally, I ...( 2 weeks ago by Odawg96)
Naturally, I disagree...this is one of the few songs that even featured ensemble singing from the Blackbyrds. These guys were contemporaries of the early K&TG; JB just as he was burning out on record. Hell, the even lifted a JB guitar lick ("Give It Up or Turn it Loose") for "Rock Creek Park" Oh, let's not forget that FUNK exists on a continuum...P-FUNK at one extreme and EWF at the OTHER. Everyone else falls in between those two. Besides, none of the Blackbyrds I've met called it disco either.

Oh...and feel free to browse my favorite list to get an idea of what kind of music I like. Not only do I listen and write about it, but I can actually PLAY most of it, too. Yeah, REAL instruments.

Good. That's always a + in music. It definitely helps when people/bands steer away from completely manufactured music. :)
EWF was virtually ...( 2 weeks ago by soundsfromnothing)
EWF was virtually unclassifiable. They did folky jazzy funk, some deep funk-type material, stuff similar to this song, Sly & fam stone type stuff. They then followed a lot of funk/soul bands and mutated into disco. Songs like "boogie wonderland" w/ high reverberated falsetto chorus vocals are an example. As far as "funk licks" in disco, remember that disco mutated out of Philly Soul and even songs like "love is the message" had a lot of funk licks. That was typical.
Not disagreeing on ...( 2 weeks ago by Odawg96)
Not disagreeing on "disco" as imitation of Philly Soul. I would argue that "disco" was a manufactured and imitative product. As far as EWFs evolution, I would never say they actually sold out (of course, "Let's Groove" is a song that they point to themselves as their caving-in song), I WOULD argue that after Charles Stepney died, their music became more "commercial". However, ALL 'N ALL is their creative peak (even though I prefer the pre-'76 albums).
You know, it's ...( 2 weeks ago by soundsfromnothing)
You know, it's funny they felt that way about "Let's Groove." I would say its a musical turning point. "Let's Groove" "Fantanstic Voyage" & songs on Bar-kays "The one" album(during 80-81)had a transitional element, changing from Disco 2 "Electric Funk"(or whatever you'd call it). Synth & vocoders(ala Zap & Roger)replace Clavinets & Violins. Many were also employing the funky Commodores nasal singing style. Though I don't usually like high falsetto singing(like on the chorus)I do like that song.
