Of course I recognise his virtues, his song writing ability has provided many rock classics during the last 30 years, but he is not a great guitarist compared to others. The reason he oozes some mystique is because he always remained out of the spotlight and this created intrigue, as with Zep.

I realize that there are more technically proficient guitar players out there like Allan Holdsworth, who is a genius player, but I still believe that Ritchie is a very good player. He developed a very unique, melodic style of playing and is just enjoyable to hear. Do you dislike his newer, acoustic stuff as well? I think it also just comes down to what is pleasing to a person to hear...it's subjective.

Of course Blackmore was a very good player. I don't doubt that but, I think Purple were a band who got their unique sound by playing together as a band and not individually. Although I rate Paice as one of the best drummers ever! I think Blackmore sounds better playing his acoustic stuff.

Also, I don't know him personally but I have met him a few times and he ironically seemed like a nice guy..except for the time he got a little pissed that a friend and I wandered into this small venue he was going to play hours before a show, walked right past his crew and sat in the front row. When he arrived he was not too thrilled that no one knew that we were sitting there...

Mickeylove01 you are wrong, he is a great guitarist compared to anyone. He has the abilty to move people emotionally with his playing and that is the greatest gift a musician can possess...He is one of the greats of all time and will be remembered as such!

mickeylove, black more was one of the first rock guitarists to alternate pick cleanly, he was also the first to fuse classical music with wrong, which influneced an entire generation of guitarists.

I interviewed Ritchie (on tape) after the Rainbow Show at the Beacon Theatre on Nov 12, 1975 I believe it was. I was surpised how soft-spoken he really is. RG was there and I interviewed him as well. I see he's still soft-spoken lol.
If you check my websites you'll see the ticket stub he autographed for me at the same time. Unfortunately I don't have the cassette anymore-I have another musical and erased over it for Nuclear Warrior stuff.
