As Dennis said in his commentary (with Steve) a few months later, he was going for those shots for two reasons:
- he didn't want to lose the entire championship on a poor safety - he was going to take any chance to win the trophy with everything on the line and both he and the Nugget having opportunities to take it on the black.

Interesting comparison between two seemingly very different sports. They were certainly both classic tournaments, both contested by all-time greats + both went down to the wire and were perhaps eventually decided more by response to pressure than by technical ability.
