Sorry to be advocatus diaboli, but I thought that candidate came from candidatus meaning clothed in white, a reference to the Roman politicians habit of covering their togas in white chalk when making speeches so that they stood out from the crowd. see also candidum=whitish colour candidus=shining white and candeo=to shine/glitter/be shining white.

surely you've heard that old story...in the olden times there were really strict penalaties for the slightest crime. This included a strict guideline on the weight of a dozen loaves of bread, and if it was even slightly under, the baker would get their hands chopped off or something. So they used to throw in an extra loaf to make sure it surpassed the minimum weight.
