Oh For crying out ... ( 5 months ago by XAvrilxlavignex4evaX)
Oh For crying out loud, it's an advert! A joke, a humorous interlude, a play on a deaf joke which I've heard many a time, excuse the pun! Get a life!
Cochlear implants ... ( 5 months ago by shanbrite2)
Cochlear implants do NOT work for everyone! They may be a good option for some, but are useless for others. And the audio you get with them is *nothing* like what the actual cochlear can hear. Frankly, I think the old stereotype is that deaf people want to be hearing, not vice versa. People should be able to choose what they want, but this ad is supporting DIVERSITY.

Thank you for including the deaf community, PepsiCo!!!! I taught my children(who are mildly autistic)to sign at an early age. It helped with their speech and communication. Best of all, they are able to speak today!!!!

I drink Coke, but will be changing to Pepsi, on account of including those with disabilities in their ads. Thank you: being disabled myself, I appreciate this!

Let me rephrase: meant to say people with differences, not "disabilities". Political correctness...sigh. Still, I'm disabled, myself. Doesn't bother me.

There have been ... ( 5 months ago by seth1987)
There have been some of those in the USA too. However this is the first to actually show an aspect of Deaf culture. In this case, it's based on a joke from Deaf culture. I can remember seeing a phone commercial, an oreos commercial, and so forth in ASL. However this is the first that actually brings up an aspect of Deaf culture instead of a couple of people signing on TV.
Oral deaf education ... ( 5 months ago by seth1987)
Oral deaf education really doesnt provide much in the educational sense. In some oral programs...kids are in kindergarten until they are 9 years old. In programs with bilingual/bicultural education language access and information access is done early (providing that it is done right). Unfortunately in America, this doesn't always happen. But Sweden has had a lot of success.
(cont.) I dont see ... ( 5 months ago by seth1987)
(cont.) I dont see why it has to be "oral only" or "ASL only". I've known kids with CIs who are completely bilingual in English and ASL. They are not limited in any way.

My wife, who teaches in an oral program, had 2 CI kids back in the 80s who were implanted late. One just graduated from UVA, his sister is a sr. at Washington & Lee. You are correct that early intervention is the key.
