The HUGE point this video lacks in mentioning is the pure mathmatical nature of music, in the design of the instruments, and the very language it is written in. The very foundation of music has nothing to do with any supernatural connection.

I'm in my third year of getting a degree in Jazz Studies. I play bass, and I'm an atheist. Human creativity and conciousness is an AMAZING thing, and to give credit to some omnipotent power is in some ways demeaning. I will also state, however, that different musicians, artists, athletes, engineers, or whoever tap into that creative zone in different ways (i.e. literal spiritual stuff). As an atheist, however, I know that it doesn't take belief in a god or gods to tap into the HUMAN spirit.

OH MAN! I feel EXACTLY the same way when I listen to DragonForce. If you don't know who they are, the are the single greatest power/speed metal band in existance. I literally just shudder and shake when I listen to them.

It's important to differentiate between religion, which is a human-built institution, and spirituality. I don't think the point is whether a religious musician or an atheist musician is a good musician or not. The point is recognising that something different and sometimes indescribable happens when a musician (or anyone) creates something really amazing.

People may be able to reduce music down to the lowest common denominator of patterns of sound, but even the fact that humans are able to associate FEELINGS with cut-and-dry patterns of sounds is pretty astounding. Don't close your mind too soon.
