This is a presentation of my next film ROMA SOUL (Le Chant des Roms) which I will shoot next year in May and October
This trailer includes :
- an extract of a TV performance (on Arte TV) by "The Queen of the Gypsies" Esma Redzepova-
- research pictures that I shot during the celebrations of Herdelez (Skopje, Macedonia) and Sara-Kali (Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France)
- a few stills taken by Marcel Courthiade in Kannauj (India) where, according to him, all Roma people come from.

Thanks for your comment. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is in Camargue, in the Rhone Delta, West of Marsseilles. The nearest city is Arles. The Sara Kali processsion happens on May 24. Best Regards LOUIS

well this was certainly beautifull! i am a rom living in the united states and i can translate a bit in the beguining. she is singing of so mant different changes in the roma world and that she wishes her mother and father where here to help her along. and the hedelezee part here among the american rom we call that the slava meaning st. gegrge day may 6th. and the statue they where carring and paying homage to was st sarah the patron saint of the gypsy's.

Thanks for your question. I think today there is no doubt that Roma people are coming from India. Despite their 1000 years of exode and repression, their language remains very close to Sanskrit and some other idioms. The debate is where in India. The languages again indicate the North, both some people say Rajasthan, others Penjab. Marcel Courthiade finally located a city of Uttar Pradesh which was destroyed in year 1000 and all its inhabitants enslavec and deported to Afghanistan...

Roma are rooted to come from branches of various people old Hindu (Hindosthan) warrior stock taken from people Rajasthan, Punjab, Kashmir, Sringar (Zingaro), Sind and the mountains valleyes above the deserts India and central Pakistan. They speak an indoeuropean language related to Sanskrit, Punjabi, Dardic and Hindi a mix of them probaly with some other Indo-Iranian elements

Roma researchers like Ian Hancock and Dr Marcel Courthiade (of INALCO, himself a linguist) are more precise about the origins of Roma (Uttar Pradesh). A unique origin will explain why they have kept a language and such of profound sense if common identity despite one thousand years of deportations.

As far as i know Ian Hancock supports an indian multi-ethnic, multi-region origin for the romanies that were brought together by the muslim invasions around 1000 AD.
