Frank himself called Vai a stunt guitarist and in the late 80's called Jeff Beck the Best alive.....but i guess you know more then Frank.....you really need to watch Vai and Beck More....AND I am the biggest Zappa fan going.....only saw him live like 15 times.
LASTLY Frank wanted JEFF to play Magi c Fingers in the 200 motels movie....when Jeff declined Frank inserted him as a cartoon :)

I always come back to Frank because NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE HIM.....Now I've found Jeff Beck ALSO.....not the great compostions of Frank....but the guitar work is just stupid take the time watch the video i mentioned.

Steve Vai another Zappa alumni is another monster on guitar.....I truely believe both these guys are better guitar players then frank but aren't even in his league for writting songs.

i like that face that frank can improv like no other. i mean anyone can memorize a sweet guitar solo and practice it over and over. just look at these 8 year old kids that can play EVH and stuff. it really comes down to the solos you make up on the spot.

I've often wondered at Frank's quote about Beck being 'more fluid' than him - Vai is a total monster no question - I think FZ was just humble and unpretentious - but his solos are, like, ok, not pyrotechnic stuff but totally mesmerising and UNLEARNABLE which both Vai and Beck are. It's not just his COMPOSITION - it's the really weird way he had of IMPROVISATION - its so speech inflected its unrepeatable and just says so much which others can't for all their skill.

i agree and disagree.....i don't think Beck can be learned as either......you can learn a song but not an inflection or tone..Zappa was a very abstract player yet if you listen closely no matter how far he wondered in a solo there was always a "tie" to the main theme.....i haven't ever seen ANYONE else be able to do that....as for Beck ? to understand Zappa's comment i think you just need to view a few videos on here like somewhere over the rainbow....drown in my own tears..FZ-JB BOTH MONSTERS.

when did frank say that? i'd like to know so i could read up on it. and just because frank regarded jeff beck so highly doesn't make him a better guitarist. thats frank's opinion. frank often criticized and undermined his own guitar playing. he was modest i theat aspect. also, i should have said that frank zappa was a better improviser than beck and vai. to me frank was the john coltrane of guitar.

Some guitarists have a style that is completely technical, predictable and (at times) boring. Zappa on the other hand is amazing, dynamic and a bunch of other adjectives gushing with praise.
I would have given anything to see Zappa duel Buck Dharma.
