THe murals of Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the province's past and present divisions.
Northern Ireland contains arguably the most famous political murals in the world. Almost 2,000 murals have been documented in Northern Ireland since the 1970s. Although the murals more often than not represent one side's political point of view, they are renowned for their professional nature and
the notable level of skill of the artists creating them. Almost all of the Northern Ireland murals promote either republican or loyalist political beliefs, often glorifying paramilitary groups such as the Provisional Irish Republican Army and the Ulster Volunteer Force, while others commemorate peo
ple who have lost their lives in paramilitary or military attacks. The most famous of the murals in Northern Ireland may well be Free Derry Corner, where the slogan "You Are Now Entering Free Derry" was painted in 1969, shortly after the Battle of the Bogside. However, some do not consider Free Der
ry Corner to be a true mural as it is only words and not images. Free Derry Corner has been used as a model for other murals in Northern Ireland, including the "You Are Now Entering Loyalist Sandy Row" mural in Belfast, which was a response to the republican message of Free Derry Corner, and the "Yo
u Are Now Entering Derry Journal Country" mural, which is an advertisement for a Derry publication.

With this power sharing and the fact that 4 out of 6 the six county's in the north are majority republican now. We will see a free Ireland within this lifetime. Its inevitable. Ireland was a nation born to be free. In nearly every generation the people have rose up for the cause. I cant wait for that day it will be like 32 Christmas's rolled into 1 and feel like my birthday everyday after yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa its come'n

hey potstillbill, not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but the murals actually do encourage tourism. there are tours that take you round a lot of them and other spots in belfast and give you an insight into the history from both sides. haven't been on one but i hear they're very good and unbiased

Truth is it was all ... ( 1 week ago by potstillbill)
Truth is it was all so long ago, nobody knows who started it. I know the IRA have done moer damage than good here, but during the old unionist parliament till 1972, there was anti catholic discrimination, and when anyone tried to raise the subject in Westminster, they were ruled out of order. Truth is, it was not Protestants or Catholics who kept it going, it was thick witted stupid fuckers from both sides.
Look all the murals ... ( 1 week ago by staufenstauf)
Look all the murals are a very basic form of art..6 -10 year olds do better..but of course what they stand for and what they mean to the people is very strong.
United Ireland..most people in the republic do not want an united ireland as it is too much hassle..and the catholics in northern ireland have grown very much apart from the southerners over the generations..let it be..manage to work it out within the 6 counties..

nationalists murals ... ( 1 week ago by BuckfastJoe)
nationalists murals are better than loyalist murals. They seem to express the feeling in a comunity. Also they are much more poetic rather than just a man in a mask trying to Intimidate people.

i was on the belfast tour bus a few weeks ago , pretty poor i found , unless you get on the top deck , driver and tour guide sat for about half an hour till they could get seats filled on the bottom deck , this pissed a lot of people off big time and at one point this woman was near to smacking the guide she was so sick of their attitude , if you ever get the chance stay well clear of the bottom deck its pointless and a waste of money

disapointing to hear that. Unfortunately its a problem the world over. I had a similar problem on tour guides when I visited liverpool, edinburgh and new york! I guess people have to do it that way or they get fired! seriously though, don't believe what you read in brochures, people are pretty much the same everywhere- although liverpool and edinburgh people are so much like belfast/ northern ireland people its unreal!! more like the northern irish than the south now i'm sorry to say
