Monk way of playing ... ( 2 months ago by hremdldw)
Monk way of playing the tune Just You Just Me. I love hearing the great Charlie Rouse,Butch Warren and the wonderful musical Frankie Dunlop,Daddy loves to hear happy drumers and Frankie was that in spades. listen too the single stroke rolls he's having a ball. And roll it up in one great big ball and Monk's genius shines through.
to produce this ... ( 2 months ago by Hexachloraphine)
to produce this kind of sound clearly requires an immense understanding of music, harmony, cadence, counterpoint and so on. I have been bought up on pop and rock music, and these jazz musicians seem to have a skill level that is way way higher, they seem more like classical music musicians in the seriousness with witch they take the music. in fact I would rather be taught piano by monk than any of the classical teachers who live near me.
great video,but ... ( 2 months ago by rena1d0)
great video, but where the hell does anyone see Frankie smoking? Really i don't care whether he is or isn't, but it's dumb to post that if it's not true. Further, if it is an assumption it is just as absent minded as posting a false comment. What the hell is hexachloraphine saying. dude, you might be smart, but there is no need to state obvious shit. Also, i dont think these guys were thinking consciously of music theory.

jazz can be learnt but cannot be taught... it is hours of jamming that these cats get the skill.
my rank of evidence ... ( 1 month ago by edgeull)
my rank of evidence: 1. monk+coltrane - carnegie hall 2. monk+art blakey / johnny griffin tenor sax - monk with modern jazz messenger 3. this one (in this list simply for monk's idiosyncratic accompaniment and dance :-) blue note version was ok... but seems like a premature rendition, i wonder why he omitted the melody all together ever since.

now this sounds like a good challenge... what is the chord progression?
During this session ... ( 1 month ago by Iphylm2)
During this session for TV in Japan, Thelonious did a solo version of "Just A Gigolo", which appears on Clint Eastwood's documentary, Straight, No Chaser. It is a stunning version of that old standard.

You're right in the sense that they know everything there is to know.. but they are no classical musiciens. Jazz requires a much higher level of musicienship. Not to say there don't exist an immense amount of musical orchestral players... but every single jazz musicien has to be the best.. no jazz musicien can make a career out of being third bassist.. or second, fourth, or fifth best anything for that matter..
These guys have soul. You can't read that off paper.

I tend to disagree.
If you're talking about sight reading, on average, classical music probably is harder. If you're talking about playing, Jazz is. When does a classical musicien ever have to improvise (and if they do, it's not even comparable to any given jazz musicien) I also believe it does depend on the instru
ment because an instrument that has a small role in classical may have a larger role in jazz.
It also depends on ... ( 1 month ago by MontgomerylandFunk)
It also depends on whether or not you're talking about small combo or big band. (Or on the other hand; orchestra or smaller group)
Over all I'd say Jazz is more difficult for any given musicien. Hands down.
We won't even get into composition.

Charlie Rouse is swingin so hard with the trio Monk had too get up and dance.Listen too the bottom that Butch Warren putting down,Frankie Dunlop on the 4 piece kit just cutting up.Monk in their playing Just You Just Me, changes out of sight.

Naturally when ... ( 2 weeks ago by MontgomerylandFunk)
Naturally when you're playing with sometimes a hundred or so other players.
Jazz is a much more individual style focusing on individual expression..
Classical music is more expressing what the composer of a piece feels or felt.

it can take your whole life to learn how to improvise to the extent these musicians can, on top of the time it takes to learn technique, sight reading and knowledge of harmony and theory. Nearly anyone can pick up an instrument and learn how to play a piece but only a few can learn to improvise. That is why jazz is so much harder, not only do you need to play your instrument correctly, you also need to be able to create on the spot.
