I was fortunate enough to go to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake IA and speak firsthand with many who were there including Tommy Allsup who flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. good stuff! This is really well put together! there is a version of comprehension that a radio broadcaster came out with. His name is Bob Dearborn and he has a pretty good explanation of the lyrics if you want another opinion. :D

Thank you to Lonestar. Just one more clue: The Jack be nimble, Jack be quick probably refers to "Jack be limbo, Jack be quick", from Chubby Checkers "Limbo Rock" two years after the planecrash. Generation lost in space = Limbo. McLean may have experienced the Limbo dance/song as the continuation of the Rock
´n´Roll period. Although maybe not a happy one. Europus

Don McLean is one of the greatest singer/guitarists ever in my opinion. Others may not agree, but I've grown up with this song, I can play it on the guitar and I know all the words. It touches my heart every time I hear him sing it.... Go Don!
