There was actually a naval battle while this was all going on, the ships didn't really just sink from a storm..
And even though the Spartans used the phalanx formation, they didn't use the traditional armor, but instead went into battle completely naked (As shown in the graphic novel)

The Phalanx also wasn't corect but this movie is for entertainment and not for historical accuracy. In my opinion a real Phalanx would really look awesome in a movie, especially with the real armor on. But that just me.
