Preceded by "Carolina Sampler" featuring long-time former WECT news anchor Ken Murphy. "Murf", as he was known to his colleagues at the station, passed away 16 January 2007 at his Wilmington home. The National Anthem on this clip is performed by Sandi Patti.

Yep...he died just after this past New Years'. Ken Murphy WAS WECT; he was there over 40 years! A true rarity for someone to stay that long at a job! A gem of a personality that will be missed...unlike Jerry Falwell.

It was actually pretty common for TV stations to sign-off the air back then (70's-80's)...it's a rare thing these days. I guess now, there's so much programming and so little time so why not stay on air all the time LOL? Of course most TV now kinda sucks anyway so there ;-)

Wow, I remember him.
I signed out of Wilmington after being born there, and living there 30 years.
Been away 12 years now, and you don't realize how backwards, and back-woods things are there until you get away to the real world.
Wilmington is at least 20 years behind.

On a sad note, Ken Murphy died shortly after New Years' 2007 at age 67 I think I read online. He was with WECT for 40 YEARS!! I haven't been in that area in a few years, but I know what you mean...it has some real catching-up to do. I wonder if there are any more fishing piers around there, after the hurricanes that hit around New Hanover, LOL

When I was a deli clerk a few years ago I used to serve the late Ken Murphy. Very nice guy. Almost always drunk though.
