I don't like the way Paxman always sides with Israel, his Jewish heritage really effect his clarity on that subject.
"You see, the ... ( 3 months ago by Clatworthy)
"You see, the question is - what was I entitled to do.." Er..no. The question was "did you threaten to overrule him?" Typical bog standard MP reply, telling the interviewer what the question is. Of course Blair and his cronies mastered this to perfection later on, and if done correctly it works very well. This was not one of those times....
Come on, any ... ( 3 months ago by reidyboy)
Come on, any intelligent interviewer should know that if somebody has not answered the question by the third time it has been asked, then it's clear they are not going to. He should have moved on and allowed the viewers decide for themselves.
If you watch the ... ( 3 months ago by Quaterno)
If you watch the follow up (recorded 3 years after this) you'll see Paxman admitting that after about the 4th time he was told in his ear that the next piece of tape was not ready to be shown so to keep it going...it seems he couldn't think of anything else. If you want to see the video I think at this time it is the most recent on my favourites.

He was a very senior government minister, I think they SHOULD be asked important questions until they give a direct answer. We can't do that so we need journalists to do it on our behalf, they shouldn't be letting any politician off the hook. This particular question had only two possible answers: yes or no. All he had to do was say one of those words. If they refuse to answer so many times it says something about their character, and that alone makes the questioning worth it.

He would be far better prime minister than Brown will ever be

I fail to see why ... ( 2 months ago by mickg1902)
I fail to see why everyone thinks that Brown is messing up. He has had a tough term so far. In his first week he had to cope with the Glasgow terrorism incident and the Gloucestershire floods. And why I ask, is everyone blaming him for the economic turmoil. He is not in control, It was the American subprime morgages going haywire. I myself say that he is doing a damn good job, or at least the best that he can. one thing i could critisise is his poor choice of cabinet.
unfortunately ... ( 2 months ago by Ragnarok494)
unfortunately that's the way it works, people instinctively blame the guy in charge, there are a lot of things which are nothing to do with brown's competency or incompetency but people just want to blame someone and cos brown is a nice big fat target anyone can blame and get away with it. he's just in the line of fire
I hate to say it ... ( 2 months ago by mickg1902)
I hate to say it but it's true. The thing that I'm going to hate to see is people voting for Cameron just because they don't like Brown. The world of poltics is not fair at-all :(.

never is, the day politics becomes fair game is when the world reverses and we all start going back in time

Oh...some of you people...Gordon wasn't voted in...do you know how many laws and act and regulation's he has brought in? Enough to quiten British people...he is a puppet getting his string's pulled.

I wish American media would grill the Bush administration like Paxman does Howard, instead of coddling them and sanctifying their incompetence.
I think Howard ... ( 1 month ago by wilverbal)
I think Howard must've felt like he was in the Twilight Zone when Paxman kept asking the question, because Howard already said he hadn't instructed Lewis. Howard probably *thought* he'd already answered the question when he said he didn't instruct Lewis what to do, and wouldn't answer "Did you threaten to overrule him?" because he thought he'd already been over that--thought Paxman was just baiting him after he thought he'd answered the question. That's my take on it, anyway. Maybe I'm wrong.
I will say, of ... ( 1 month ago by wilverbal)
I will say, of course, that Howard doesn't come across well in this interview. And I'm not exactly a fan of his. I just think there's that innocent explanation for the way Howard handled this interview.
Tony Blair must ... ( 1 month ago by wilverbal)
Tony Blair must feel like the luckiest man in the world to have gotten out when he did. And Gordon Brown must feel like Lady Ludy is just smacking him around. Brown was a big part of Blair's success, and the way things are going now, Brown must feel like his political career is amounting to: "All sowing, no reaping." It's hard not to pity the man.

-thought Paxman was just baiting him after he thought he'd answered the question. That's my take on it, anyway. Maybe I'm wrong.
you are wrong. the question was, did he threaten to ovverule the dude? yes or no answer. did he ever answer it? not he didn't. did you post a comment here on youtube? yes, or no? yes, you did. it's that easy. so easy, that one must wonder why howard would not answer him? it shows a need to hide so
mething.
Exactly he asked ... ( 1 month ago by rc2869)
Exactly he asked him the question and Howard answered another question - i.e. the one he wanted too. Howard was a canny political operator but got caned on this one.
I like Paxman because intuitively he is a figure of the establishment with some liberal outooks. Therefore no-one gets an easy ride.
