IMHO this is by far the best short subject cartoon Disney ever made. It was the first use of the multiplane camera and many of the effects would find their way into "Fantasia" released the following year. Note Disney's signature sentimentality, anthropomorphism, pastoral settings. So timeless, beautiful, and balanced is this cartoon that it should rate in the top ten animated shorts of all time.

Thank you so much, blip3452, for posting this classic piece of art. It literally brings tears to my eyes seeing this again. I grew up with this as a kid, and I appreicate it now more than ever. Just to see that old windmill, on its last leg, still standing after that storm, as a safehaven for animals is very, very touching.
Thank you, once again.

Yeah, this cartoon used to scare me sometimes when I was a kid, too. A lot of things in this cartoon, such as the music and animation, seemed very real for me, and they worked so well. I even remember as a kid having a dream that somehow involved the old mill.
Looking back at this cartoon today, I'm still impressed with how the Disney crew seemed to make everything look very sophisticated and realistic. It's no wonder it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Thank you, Walt Disney.

The multiplane camera was built in the late '30s for the first movie from Disney, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", but in order to let everybody know if the film is prepared, this film was made as a "test". The multiplane camera was lovely, and the scenes are beautiful. After which, the multiplane camera became a part of Walt Disney Studios from 1936-late 1990s.
