Angela Lansbury deserved the Academy Award for this performance. Powerful, manipulative, but strangely compelling performance. Sad to say, it's not hard to understand Ms. Islen's reasonings. Truly Machiavellian, she's chilling.
This leads to one of the most beautiful, triumphant moments in film, in my opinion. When Raymond Shaw gives his life for his country, to ensure that Ms. Islen is stopped.

Communism is just bad. It may look ok on paper... but in practice it just doesn't work. Just take a look at the former USSR under Stalin or the North Korea of today. The majority of people suffer at the hands of their leaders.

Take a look at the Communist Manifesto and you might not like it so much on paper either. Then again it was born during periods of Dickensian poverty when there was a huge amount of anger towards the wealthy. Some of the ideas are good, but it was all a bit too extreme.
What's interesting is that whereas Russia was very extreme internally, the US was (and is) quite free internally but very extreme externally.
