Honestly, Rakim doesn't deserve to be in the top 10 lyricists of all time.
He undoubtably deserves to be one of the top five, hell probably top 2 or 3, most influential MC's to ever grace a mic. That is not debatable; however, there are at least 10 MC's that have come along after Rakim that are better lyricists. Its just that simple.

To each his own. I prefer to look at each artist objectively, without any of the hype that surrounds them. If Rakim just started putting out music today, no one would claim he is one of the best ever.
Once you take into account how much respect an artist has from outside your own opinion, you start rating artists on other people's opinions. That's when you turn into one of those douchebags who thinks Straight Outta Compton is the best CD ever, and Pac is greatest to ever grace a mic.

I am a huge hip hop head. Every sub genre, every era, everything (other than the mainstream crap that gets play these days.) I'll throw in some Afrikka Bambaata for a while and then immediately switch to some Aesop Rock. Good hip hop is good hip hop, regardless of what year it came out. I appreciate every good piece of hip hop music no matter what the year, which is more than you (admittedly) can say for yourself.
