The idea of "believe" in this song is more inclined to mean the unconscious idolization we sometimes get lost in believing. Did Jesus come to show us his self, or did Jesus come to show us the right way to live? It is one thing to idolize, another thing to practice what you understand to be true. The former tends to get oversensitive to criticism because it has not understood. The latter doesn't need to defend against criticism, because what is true will justify itself to be true.

In buddhism there is a similar teaching that goes around the idea that to attain enlightment, you must "kill the image of buddha". In my humble opinion, most religions ultimately teach us to live our own life fully as ourselves, the only life we are in direct control of, in the right Ways as reality dictates, not as past or idol does. In conclusion, by saying he doesn't believe in what he has believed in all these while, means that he has come to understand what he believed in - to start living.

I have to say this song gave me a different perspective on john lennon.
Dont get me wrong i think he was an amazing man and had many important points and beliefs.
Yet i dont agree with this song.
I believe he has a right to feel the way he did but i now see him differently.
Im a bit dissapointed.
