I'm entirely not sure it is a metaphor for lack of communication. She listens and asks questions; he summarizes well, admits to mistakes; they are both calm and reflective (no pun intended)... I'd say that talking through reflective glass was as effective and intimate as a letter, even. But finally its just a phone call of course.

Ce film est beau comme une cath édrale gothique, et cette scène en est la clef de voute. A elle seule, elle justifie le reste. Quand on a vu ce film, c'est 10 minutes de pur bonheur cinématographique (mais il faut avoir vu le début pour tout saisir): le jeu des acteurs, tous les non dits qui passent par le regard (pur) de Nast asia Kinski.
